Springfield … Parents that are neglecting their child by not paying child support will face stricter penalties under legislation passed by the General Assembly and signed into law by the Governor.

“It’s completely tragic and unacceptable for a parent to skirt the system and more importantly their role as a parent by not paying their fair share of child support. We need to hold parents responsible for raising their children,” said State Representative Dennis Reboletti (R-Elmhurst).

Reboletti stated that Senate Bill 1035 will allow the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, who administers the child support program, to suspend the Illinois driving privileges of parents who are delinquent on their payments. In addition, municipalities now have the ability to immobilize and impound vehicles of certain child support debtors. This legislation also adds severance pay to what constitutes income.

Reboletti said, “Single parents are constantly struggling to provide the financial means to properly raise their child. This legislation is one step in ensuring that these children are not forgotten.”
